Independent music distributor Symphonic Distribution has updated its policies governing AI-generated music, outlining how artists and labels can distribute recordings created with artificial intelligence. The announcement addresses growing concerns about copyright ownership, artist impersonation, fraudulent content, and the different requirements imposed by digital streaming platforms.
Under the updated framework, artists must accurately disclose their use of generative AI when required and ensure they have the necessary rights to distribute their music. Symphonic also confirmed it is investing in fingerprinting, AI detection, provenance tracking, and validation technologies to help identify AI-generated content and verify information provided during submission. The company acknowledges that these tools are not infallible and intends to combine technical verification with disclosures from artists and rights holders.
The company also emphasizes that acceptance by a distributor does not guarantee availability on every streaming service. Platforms may apply their own restrictions to AI-generated content, meaning a release accepted by Symphonic could still be rejected or removed by an individual DSP.
Symphonic is also prioritizing AI music created using models with appropriately licensed or otherwise authorized training materials, while acknowledging that verifying AI training data remains difficult. Separately, the distributor reaffirmed that participation in its AI dataset licensing programs is entirely voluntary, requiring explicit consent from artists and rights holders. Its policies prohibit unauthorized voice cloning, misleading metadata, fraudulent streaming activity, and mass-generated content lacking meaningful originality.
The policy update highlights a growing distinction between the ability to create music using generative AI and the right to distribute and monetize that music commercially. For independent artists and labels, compliance increasingly depends not only on their distributor's requirements but also on the policies of each streaming platform.
