Sonilo is partnering with Musical AI to connect generated music with the licensed works that contributed to it, according to October 27 reporting quoting executives from both companies. Sonilo develops tools that generate music and sound effects from video, text or both. Musical AI provides technology for managing consent and attributing generated outputs to source material. The reported collaboration would assess contributions from sound recordings and underlying compositions separately, recognizing that the recording and the song it contains can have different owners.
The partnership addresses a question that catalog licensing alone does not resolve: how to allocate value among individual works and rightsholders when a system generates new music. Musical AI describes its technology as operating after generation, producing attribution records without requiring access to a model’s internal workings. Such records could support royalty accounting, but they do not themselves establish payment rates, contractual entitlement or the accuracy of every attribution. The materials reviewed do not disclose the partnership’s revenue-allocation formula, payment schedule or independently audited performance results. Its practical significance will depend on how attribution is incorporated into licensing agreements and payments to creators.
