Musixmatch has acquired Los Angeles-based Music Reports, Inc., expanding its business beyond lyrics and music metadata into music rights administration, licensing, and royalty processing. The acquisition includes Music Reports' Songdex copyright registry, Blokur rights-matching and licensing technology, and Cuetrak cue sheet management software. By combining these systems with its existing technology, Musixmatch aims to build a unified platform connecting sound recordings, compositions, ownership information, and royalty payments. The acquisition marks Musixmatch's first major expansion through an acquisition, with financial terms undisclosed.
The acquisition also supports Musixmatch's plans to develop agentic royalty management, using AI agents to continuously identify music usage, match recordings to compositions and rights holders, and reconcile royalties while maintaining human oversight. Music Reports' established copyright and licensing infrastructure will provide additional data to support these processes, particularly as AI-generated music increases the volume and complexity of music usage. Musixmatch founder and CEO Max Ciociola described the company's objective as ensuring that every use of music can be identified, ownership established, and creators compensated. The combined platform is intended to reduce unmatched royalties and automate traditionally manual administration processes, although the companies have not announced a timeline for full integration.
