Music IP Holdings launched an online licensing portal on October 26, allowing eligible smaller AI technology and content companies to license its patent portfolio through its Strategic Innovation Partner program. The portal follows agreements announced August 20 with AI music company Udio and social music service GRAI, identified as the portfolio’s first technology licensees. Music IP Holdings was formed through a strategic partnership between Universal Music Group and intellectual-property firm Liquidax Capital. Its patent licenses address technologies used to create and manage AI-generated content, rather than automatically granting permission to use particular songs or recordings.
Examples listed in the company’s portfolio include patents addressing AI-generated musical derivatives, approval and controlled distribution of generated content, superfan subscription tiers, and music-file encoding. These illustrate how the portfolio extends beyond generation into distribution and commercial services. The company also lists pending applications, which should not be confused with issued patents. The scope of any license depends on its terms and the applicable patent claims; inclusion in the portfolio does not establish that every AI service uses a patented invention or needs a license.
MIH's licensable portfolio includes the following
- AI-Generated Music Derivative Works
- Multi-Stage Approval and Controlled Distribution of AI-Generated Derivative Content
- Superfan Music and Media Subscription Tiers
- Advanced Encoding of Music Files
Names above follow MIH’s published portfolio listings; descriptions are not a legal interpretation of the patent claims.
