South Korean music creator Meomuru has reached No. 3 on Melon's Top 100 chart with "Have You Become the Adult You Dreamed Of?", a rock ballad featuring vocals generated using the AI music platform Suno. Released in June 2026, the track gained popularity through short-form videos before climbing into the upper ranks of South Korea's streaming charts in October. Meomuru reportedly wrote the lyrics and directed the production, while AI generated the vocal performance. The song also reached No. 2 on Genie Music and YouTube Music, demonstrating how AI-assisted recordings are increasingly competing alongside established human performers on mainstream streaming platforms.
South Korea's Unresolved AI Copyright and Royalty Framework
The song's commercial success comes amid uncertainty over how South Korea recognizes and compensates human contributions to AI-assisted music. On August 3, the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) introduced registration criteria allowing copyright administration for human-created portions of AI-assisted works when a person had substantially participated in songwriting, composition or arrangement. However, KOMCA withdrew the framework on August 25, following objections from lawmakers and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, which argued that broader industry consultation and national standards were necessary. KOMCA continues to exclude fully AI-generated compositions without substantial human creative input from copyright registration. The withdrawal leaves creators facing uncertainty over how qualifying human contributions to AI-assisted works can be registered and administered through the association.
AI Music's Growing Royalty and Registration Challenges
The uncertainty extends to royalty distribution and the verification of AI-generated compositions. In September, South Korean reporting identified hundreds of works initially registered as human-created that were subsequently found to involve AI, raising concerns about inaccurate ownership claims and royalty payments. KOMCA has previously suspended payments associated with disputed AI-created works and has committed to strengthening monitoring against fraudulent registrations. However, the copyright status of a composition is separate from the commercial exploitation of its recording: an AI-assisted track may generate streaming revenue even when copyright registration for some of its musical elements remains unresolved. Meomuru's chart success illustrates the growing gap between the commercial adoption of AI music and the legal framework governing ownership, registration and compensation for human creative contributions.
