AI music company GRAI has announced a partnership with MassiveMusic, part of Songtradr, covering music catalog delivery and licensed AI training data for its upcoming social streaming platform. The partnership brings together two companies operating in different areas of the music industry:
- GRAI: Founded in 2025 by the team behind video-editing app Vochi, GRAI is developing a platform combining music streaming, social discovery and AI-powered creative experiences. The company is also building its own music foundation model designed to understand musical elements including melody, harmony and rhythm.
- MassiveMusic: Part of Songtradr, MassiveMusic provides music licensing, catalog distribution, metadata technology and rights management infrastructure for digital platforms, alongside sonic branding and music supervision services for commercial clients.
Two Separate Licensing Agreements
The partnership establishes two distinct licensing arrangements:
- Commercial Music Streaming: MassiveMusic will supply recordings from participating independent labels and distributors through its existing rights-holder agreements. It will also provide enhanced metadata describing tracks across more than 30 attributes, including genre, mood, instrumentation and musical key, supporting GRAI's search and recommendation features. Participating rights holders will receive payments and usage reports under their applicable agreements.
- AI Model Training: MassiveMusic will provide GRAI with a separate dataset containing music specifically approved by rights holders for AI training through its opt-in licensing system. Permission to train an AI model does not automatically authorize GRAI to remix, modify or commercially exploit the underlying recordings or compositions in new creative outputs.
Building a Licensed AI Music Platform
The agreements form part of GRAI's broader strategy to establish music rights infrastructure before launching its service. The company has also licensed technology patents from Music IP Holdings, alongside Udio, covering aspects of AI-assisted music creation, authorization, distribution and payment. In September, GRAI acquired Hangout, a social music platform developed by the creators of Turntable.fm. GRAI is currently testing early versions of its service using a MassiveMusic test catalog, with no public launch date announced. The partnership distinguishes between licensing music for streaming and obtaining permission to use music as AI training data, two activities involving different rights and commercial arrangements. Financial terms, royalty rates and the identities of participating rights holders have not been disclosed.
