The European Commission has published a standardized set of three icons designed to help audiences identify content created or manipulated using artificial intelligence. The icons include a basic AI symbol, a label for fully AI-generated content, and another for partially AI-modified material. Available in black, white, and semi-transparent variations, the icons can be downloaded and used free of charge by creators, publishers, and digital platforms. The Commission specifically identifies fully AI-composed music as an example of content that could carry the fully AI-generated label, alongside synthetic videos, artwork, and AI-generated news summaries.
The icons support transparency requirements under Article 50 of the European Union's AI Act, which addresses disclosures for certain AI-generated or manipulated content, including deepfakes. Although the official icons are optional, applicable disclosure obligations remain mandatory, and using an icon alone does not guarantee legal compliance. Artistic, creative, fictional, and satirical works may qualify for less intrusive disclosure requirements. For music streaming services, distributors, and rights holders, the standardized labels provide a potential way to distinguish fully synthetic recordings from music modified using AI, although the EU has not required every AI-generated song to display one of these icons.
